Honolulu Theatre for Youth Presents ‘Hold These Truths’

Actor Daniel Dae Kim is part of the team bringing the acclaimed Off-Broadway drama “Hold These Truths” to Hawaii. Dedicated to the memory of the late Sen. Daniel K. Inouye, the show tells the true story of second-generation Japanese American Gordon Hirabayashi, who resisted the Japanese American internment during World War II in the famous case, Hirabayashi v. United States.

Set in Seattle during World War II, “Hold These Truths” follows Hirabayashi, then a University of Washington student, as he fights to reconcile his country’s betrayal with his passionate belief in the U.S. Constitution.

President Obama posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Hirabayashi (1918-2012), the nation’s highest civilian honor, in April 2012.

Kim said: “I was deeply moved by ‘Hold These Truths’ when I saw it in New York. Having lived in Hawaii for almost nine years now, I recognized how inspiring Gordon Hirabayashi’s story would be to our community.”

‘Walking Dead’ Star to Speak at UH on ‘Chekhov and Zombies’

Film and television actress Sarah Wayne Callies, known for her role on AMC’s hit series “The Walking Dead,” grew up in Honolulu. And she’s now returning to the islands for a special presentation at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, set for Saturday, Dec. 8 at Kennedy Theatre.

It’s being described as the final event in the University of Hawaii’s Department of Theatre and Dance’s “undead marathon,” following the conclusion of Kennedy Theatre’s “Uncle Vanya and Zombies.”

Callies will come to Kennedy Theatre to offer her insights on the zombie phenomenon and its connection to Anton Chekhov. This public presentation will be presented free of charge; tickets will be handed out at the box office before the event.

Callies grew up in Honolulu before attending Dartmouth College, where she majored in Drama and graduated magna cum laude. She received her Master of Fine Arts degree at the National Theatre Conservatory, spending two seasons in principal and understudy roles at the Tony Award–winning Denver Center Theatre Company.

‘Hunger Games’ Sequel to Film in Hawaii

“Catching Fire,” the 2013 sequel to “The Hunger Games,” started principal photography yesterday in Atlanta. The film will then be shot on location in the beaches and jungles of Hawaii before wrapping in late December.

According to Lionsgate, “Catching Fire” will be released worldwide on November 22, 2013, and stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Jeffrey Wright, with Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland.

“We are so excited to be embarking on this adventure with Francis Lawrence, who has already exhibited immense creative vision and resourcefulness in casting the film and planning its look and feel,” Said Lionsgate’s President of Production Eric Feig. “The stakes are raised in every way in this second story, and we are thrilled to get the production underway in these perfect locations, with our excellent returning cast and some world class actors in new roles.”

Allstar Weekend to perform June 25

Music group Allstar Weekend’s “Next Big Thing” is happening in Hawaii. The Polynesian Cultural Center is kicking off the summer season with the group’s Hawaii debut performance on Saturday, June 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the 2,675-seat Pacific Theater.

Best known for their appearances on the Disney Radio’s “Next Big Thing” contest, and popular new songs like “A Different Side Of Me” and “Come Down With Love,” the group’s newest single, “Not Your Birthday,” is currently being highlighted in the feature film Prom. Their debut album, “Suddenly Yours” peaked at number 62 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

“We’re very excited that Allstar Weekend has accepted our invitation to headline the Polynesian Cultural Center’s summer concert,” said Raymond Magalei, marketing director for the center.

Hawaii couple launches pop culture podcast

The Hawaii-based husband and wife duo behind one of the world’s most successful blogs and podcasts devoted to the TV show “LOST” has launched a new daily pop culture show.

Ryan and Jen Ozawa, hosts of “The Transmission,” launched “Popspotting” on May 23, exactly one year after “LOST” left the airwaves. But instead of devoting over an hour of conversation a week to a single show, “Popspotting” serves up a bite-sized chat every weekday, and covers movies, television, music, books, and much more.

“Popspotting” also adds guests into the mix, with regular trivia challenges and special interviews planned.

BJ Penn to open UFC Gym in Honolulu

UFC Gym announced today that it will partner with UFC superstar and former two-division champion BJ Penn to establish a signature BJ Penn fitness facility in the fighter’s home state of Hawaii.

The facility, which will begin enrolling members in Summer 2011, is set to open for workouts in January 2012, and will be located in the Kamehameha Schools Kaka‘ako neighborhood, at the former Pipeline Café on Pohukaina Street in Honolulu.

Pianist Donna Stoering to tour islands

Local documentary wins film festival award

Out of more than 600 films screening at the 11th Annual San Diego Asian Film Festival, ‘One Voice,’ a local documentary from Pacific Islanders in Communications (PIC) about the Kamehameha Schools Song Contest, was this year’s audience award winner.

“The Harrah’s Rincon Audience Award is special because it is chosen by the people who attend the festival and actually saw the film,” says Ruth Bolan, producer of ‘One Voice’ and executive director of Pacific Islanders in Communications. “It reaffirms our mission of sharing the stories of the Pacific with the world, and the importance of perpetuating Hawaiian language and culture.”
