Second Oahu Fringe Festival set for November

The second annual Oahu Fringe Festival is set to hit the stages of Honolulu’s Chinatown November 8-10, 2012. After a successful premiere in 2011, Oahu Fringe Festival returns as a Fringe Festival destination, offering more innovative new works related, but not limited to, theatre, music, dance, improv and comedy.

Based in Chinatown, the Oahu Fringe Festival offers local, US and international artists a place to showcase their work in an atmosphere of community and creativity. Shows will run at various venues in Chinatown including Kumu Kahua Theatre, The ARTS at Marks Garage, Ong King Arts Centre and The Loading Zone.

‘Harry Potter’ star sings of love for Hawaii

Tom Felton, the English actor famous for his role as Draco Malfoy, the foil of Harry Potter in the popular movie series, is a budding musician who has discovered magic in the Hawaiian Islands.

Tom has just released a solo song titled “Hawaii” which laments the chilly weather and traffic snarls of everyday England for the laidback life under the palm trees on the Island of Hawaii.

“Hawaii casts a spell on all who visit and Tom’s no exception,” says George Applegate, executive director of the Big Island Visitors Bureau. “Very flattering that someone from as far away as England, and as talented as Tom Felton, is moved to sing about our idyllic way of life.”

Hallowbaloo 2011 to light up Honolulu

Allstar Weekend to perform June 25

Music group Allstar Weekend’s “Next Big Thing” is happening in Hawaii. The Polynesian Cultural Center is kicking off the summer season with the group’s Hawaii debut performance on Saturday, June 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the 2,675-seat Pacific Theater.

Best known for their appearances on the Disney Radio’s “Next Big Thing” contest, and popular new songs like “A Different Side Of Me” and “Come Down With Love,” the group’s newest single, “Not Your Birthday,” is currently being highlighted in the feature film Prom. Their debut album, “Suddenly Yours” peaked at number 62 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

“We’re very excited that Allstar Weekend has accepted our invitation to headline the Polynesian Cultural Center’s summer concert,” said Raymond Magalei, marketing director for the center.

Hawaii students to build, play ukulele

Children on the island of Lanai will soon build and strum their own ukuleles and Hawaiian lap steel guitars, courtesy the Lanai Art Center and Waianu’s Hale Kuai of Honolulu.

The ‘O Ka La Na‘i Nui program, to be held at the Lanai Art Center during the second week of August, will engage fourth and sixth graders in hands-on workshops that promote Hawaiian culture and encourage students to pursue vocational opportunities in Hawaii.

World folk group HuDost coming to Maui

Experimental world folk group HuDost has added Hawaii to its cross-country tour, and will perform at Studio Maui in Haiku next Saturday, Dec. 11. This after Wednesday appearance on Mana’o Radio’s “Alanamana Show” on 91.5FM on Wed., Dec. 8.

HuDost has been getting rave reviews across the board for their latest releases “Trapeze” and “Waking the Skeleton Key.” As one music critic said: “It’s nice to see a band that doesn’t sacrifice content for commercialism, yet has a theoretically almost limitless upside for hit potential.”
