Mele Mei music events planned
“Mele Mei” is a month-long celebration of the unique music of Hawaii. It encompasses a large number of daily workshops, concert performances, and award ceremonies.
“Mele Mei” means May Music in Hawaiian. It features anchor Hawaiian music events throughout the month. The content within the month is provided by non-profit organizations who share similar missions and goals and who have come together to increase awareness, presence and interest of Hawaiian music by providing Hawaiian music programs and activities within the month.
Activities include concerts & brunch, workshops, walking tours, contests and festivals.
The participating non-profit organizations are the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, Pakele Foundation, Archimedes Hawai’i Kukila Project, Maiki Aiu Foundation, Ka Lei Papahi O Kakuhihewa, Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts.
There has been a decline in the interest of Hawaiian Music evident by the number of tourist venues throughout Hawaii that do not present live Hawaiian music performances. Broadcast systems also drop Hawaiian music programming due to low ratings.
It is the objective and goal of Mele Mei to focus an entire month on Hawaiian music as a way to create a radical difference in the way Hawaiian music is viewed throughout all communities in Hawaii and the world.
