Hiki Nō Festival showcases student video stories

HPA Hiki No CrewThe public is invited to view outstanding student-produced video stories on the big screen at PBS Hawaii’s first-ever Hiki Nō Festival. The featured stories, produced last school year, have aired on PBS Hawaii’s student news program, Hiki Nō, and are nominated in this year’s Hiki Nō Awards.

Hiki Nō is Hawaii’s first statewide student news network, made up of 86 public, private and charter schools from across the islands. Through the production of video news stories about their schools and communities, students gain valuable workforce and life skills, while teachers engage their students in hands-on, collaborative learning.

The Hiki Nō Festival screening events are free of charge and will be at these locations:

OAHU

Consolidated Theatres – Ward
Wednesday, August 27 at 6:00 pm

Consolidated Theatres – Pearlridge
Saturday, August 30 at 6:00 pm

MAUI

Consolidated Theatres – Kaahumanu
Monday, August 25 at 6:00 pm

KAUAI

Waimea Theater
Tuesday, August 26 at 6:00 pm

HAWAII ISLAND

Hilo: Waiakea High School
Waimea: Hawaii Preparatory Academy –
Gates Performing Arts Center
Thursday, August 28 at 6:00 pm

The public can also watch the nominated stories from Friday, August 29 through Thursday, September 4 at Consolidated Theatres – Pearlridge for a reduced ticket price. A portion of these proceeds will go toward supporting the Hiki Nō learning initiative in Hawaii’s classrooms.

The winners of the Hiki Nō Awards will be announced via live stream on Wednesday, September 17 at PBSHawaii.org. Leslie Wilcox, President and CEO of PBS Hawaii, will present the winners with Donna Tanoue, President of Bank of Hawaii Foundation, Hiki Nō’s founding broadcast underwriter. A panel of veteran local news professionals will determine the winners.
