"Dog" arrested for fleeing Mexico

Duane “Dog” Chapman is known worldwide for catching criminals who skip out on bail, but jumping bail in Mexico three years ago has now landed the bounty hunter behind bars. Chapman, whose larger-than-life personality is the heart of a popular reality TV series, was picked up by federal marshalls yesterday as government officials responded to an extradition request from Mexican authorities. Chapman’s son Leland and colleague Tim Chapman were also arrested. In 2003, Duane Chapman led a group of bounty hunters and a camera crew to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to hunt down convicted rapist Andrew Luster, who had evaded U.S. law enforcement for over six months. They captured Luster, who was eventually sentenced to 124 years in jail. But bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico, and Chapman and his crew were arrested for kidnapping. They posted $1,500 bail each, but then left the country. International fame and TV series followed, but Mexican authorities have apparently not forgotten the case. Yesterday, prosecutors argued that the men should be held without bail until their extradition hearing, since the case is international. Chapman’s attorney noted, however, that Chapman has a very high profile and strong ties to the community, and would not flee. U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren seemed to concur, but held off deciding on bail until a hearing this afternoon.

The arrests came just as filming for the upcoming third season of the popular A&E series was wrapping up, so it will likely not affect the show in the short term. The TV crew was on hand at the courthouse yesterday, as Chapman’s wife Beth defended her husband and thanked the public for their support.

Although the TV show has been a runaway success, Chapman has had his share of troubles.

Just yesterday, Chapman was sued by Roy Barnes, the owner of a motel in Colorado Springs. Chapman’s team and a film crew showed up at his motel last June, and a confrontation between Barnes and the bounty hunters was broadcast on the show. Barnes claims that every time the episode airs, he is subject to harassment from Chapman’s fans.

A similar lawsuit is pending in San Francisco, after Chapman and local police mistakenly grabbed a man they thought was a bail jumper.

I ashamed that our government would even listen to Mexico concerning this case. It goes to show what a scumbag country Mexico is. Dog and the Boys brought a criminal to justice and now he is behind bars but yet they are arrests. I have a suggestion for Mexico. Why don’t they try to worry about keeping illegals from entering our country and putting the real criminals behind bars. I hope and pray that the uproar from this event will give Mexico the biggest headache they have ever had. I am shocked, angry, and sick that our government did not tell Mexico to go straight to you know where with their the request to send these three back over the border. Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico? So is lawlessness and crossing the border illegally why don’t they spend there time wisely and worry about stopping those things instead of putting three men in jail that are taking criminals off the streets and setting a positive example for all of us. I say it’s time everyone that loves and supports Dog and the entire crew stand up and say, “THIS WILL NOT STAND”! We will boycott everything and we will start throwing every single low-life that is here illegally right on the steps of the Mexican embassy.

It’s time that we speak up for Dog and make a stand.

I think it is ridiculous to have arrested Dog and family for helping get a sexual predator off the streets of both american and mexican countries. How many mexican, or visitors of mexico did this assclown get to drug and rape? How do we really know? I think that the government of Mexico needs to get with the program and deal with something important, like corruption, or the issues of illegals, or the whole poor thing regarding the invasion of America by their” my counntry is poor, I have to many babies, so I go to America and make more babies that I don’t have to pay for…. I am a huge fan, as are many. Sure the U.S Government has a job to do, there is also common sense. I really didn’t think that this would go far. I am concerned for Dog, Leland, and Tim, not to mention the ladies and children in their lives. To think that someone who obviously has justice in mind would be treated like a criminal is too hard to think about. I pray for you all and I pray that true Justice will prevail.

THEN MAYBY ALL THE DAM MEXICANS WOULD STAY IN THERE OWN COUNTRY.
THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO DO THIS TO THE DOG.
IF SO THEY SHOULD BE TRIED FOR LETTING THERE PEOPLE RUNNING TO AMERICA AND NOT DOING NOTHING TO HELP STOP IT
HE WAS DOING HIS JOB IF HE HAD NOT DONE WHAT HE HAD THEN MAYBE ONE OF US WOULD HAVE TO DEAL WITH WHAT THIS SICK PERSON MIGHT HAVE DONE WITH ONE OF ARE FAMILY MEMBERS.

DDeane Chapman located a sexual preditor who was on the FBI and America’s Most wanted top ten list. A criminal who with the help of his family fortune had eluded the police for several years. Hiding out in various countries. He is an american and dog the best bounty hunter in the world located him and brought him home for trial. Mexico protected this felon and wants to arrest the man who brought him to justice. America needs to take strong steps to put Mexico in it’s place, there are many U.S felons already in Mexico and we can’t do a thing about them. Out government needs to put a stop to this.

Whomever it was that gave the go ahead to round up the Chapman’s on behalf of Mexico needs to be banished to Mexico because this is an act of treason! Stand tough Chapman’s the US goverment has no doubt failed you but your fellow American’s stand with you and believe in you!

  • The Chapman’s themselves made the decision to break the laws of Mexico, and when they were confronted by Mexican authorities they refused to turn over their prisioner. They put themselves, their prisioner, the Mexican authorites, as well as innocent bystanders in danger with their foolishness. Innocent people can, and have been killed or injured by bounty hunters like the Chapmans who ignore and usurp the soverign laws of other countries.

Considering this, the Mexican Court was quite lenient in allowing the Chapman’s bond.
But the Chapman’s then did the very same thing they critisize and arrest others for doing: THEY JUMPED BOND.
    Whatsmore…they fled jusistiction.

I’ve heard some claim that “it’s been 3 years, why go after them after so long?”
The reality is that Court cases proceed slowly, and it took this long for justice to catch up with the Chapman’s.

    Feel bad for them?

Consider: they had 3 years to resolve this situation, and chose to ignore it.

What’s truly ironic is how they are now making the same excuses they openly dismiss from bail jumpers they themselves catch.

    A bit hypocritical, IMO.

Im confused why everyone is so upset. Heres a group of individuals that not only apprehended someone outside of there geographical area of employment, but outside of the United States. Did they ever think of checking the laws in a foreign country to see if it was illegal to do so? Obviously not..

Its ironic and makes me laugh that they jumped bail in Mexico and then go on to make a TV show in the United States where they capture/threaten/curse out people for doing the same thing.

Oh by the way, the United States and Mexico have been extraditing prisoners between each other for a couple of years now. So he probally will wind up back there to answer his charges. They broke the law, they should answer to the charges just like anyone else.

It seems Mr. Chapman is under the assumption that the laws do not pertain to him as it does to those he hunts down on the shows each week. This man has the audacity to arrest those who break the laws and does not live up to their bail conditions, yet he has done the exact same thing in Mexico and now hides out in Hawaii. Where is the justification? Clearly the man does not practice what he preaches. He should act like a man and go back to Mexico and face the music. Just because he has a bit of a profile on the show as a bounty hunter does NOT give him the right to be immune from the law.

The Mexican government should thank the Chapman’s because they eliminated a threat to Mexican women. I can’t believe that our government has done the impossible to extradict Dog when they did nothing to capture Andrew Luster. Is it fair to put in jail someone who helps society because of capturing someone who was a threat to women?

  • Funny how Mexico extradited drug kingpin Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix to the US on Saturday. I guess our federal government sold the Dog out for this creep. That’s a sad commentary on our federal judicial system, the federal judge who signed the warrent and all the marshals who so cowardly broke into the Chapmans residence with guns drawn to make the arrest. It’s a shame we didn’t just send our military to get Mr. Felix. I mean we did it to get Saddam. Why would we trade an upstanding American icon like the Dog for a drug dealer? So Mexico can feel good about putting an American celebrity on trial? Do they really need a confidance boost that badly? Maybe if the Mexican people would put competent people in office, the Dog would’t have had to do the Mexican police force’s job for them.
    God Bless You Dog!

I wasn’t going to wade in on this but here goes…First let me say that I am a fan of The Dog and send my wishes out to his family. His arrest could have and should have been done with more consideration for that fact that small children were in the house at the time. It’s not like they were taking down a violent criminal.
The laws that govern bounty hunters in the US I imagine do not allow for captures in foreign countries so what the Dog and his crew did was illegal according to Mexican law. Despite doing what was ethically and morally correct by capturing Luster the Dog should have to account for his actions. I’m sure he would be the first to admit this. Why didn’t he? Who knows. Why did the Mexican govt wait so long? Who knows. The court system moves slowly… Someone suggested he was hiding in Hawaii. I hardly think so. I imagine the general thought was that nothing would come from the matter. Dog was just going about his life trying to make his community a better place. Starring on national tv every week is hardly hiding!
Apparently Luster’s attorney has been pushing for this (so I read). Seems to me that someone is holding a grudge and perhaps it’s a matter of ‘money talks’. Luster had money and was able to hide in Mexico as long as he did…
The extradition of the drug kingpin to the US the day after Dog was arrested is a scary proposition. I’d hate to think that a trade is at the core of this. As far as the comments made about the Dog’s family using the same excuses that the people he arrests each week use, well…not a great deal has really been said by the family. Why don’t we wait until Tuesday’s interview to see what they have to say.
The Dog uses compassion for the most part when he takes someone off the street. Let’s hope the same compassion is offered to him. Second chances..everybody should get one.

This is my response to Mexico and it’s Government…

    Dear Sir,

I one am appalled at the actions of your Government, it would seem to me that you as the President of Mexico would have far more pressing matters on your agenda.

My only thought as to your motive is that you wish to alienate all Americans from the Country of Mexico, so as a result me and my wife have cancelled our cruise to your country and scheduled another one that visits a country that does not welcome rapists such as your country did and then allow them safe haven. Then to make matters worse punishes a man that rids your streets of a preditor. This is NOT a Country that me nor my wife wish to visit.

I only hope more people realize what we have and follow suit.

Not long ago you asked the American Government and it’s People to Approve NAFTA, that for us to do so was asking for us to TRUST your Government. This is how you choose to betray that trust. You now have shown me and I am sure many more how wrong it was to oblige your Government and welcome your goods and imports to America.

I will close with this statement:

Please come to some sort realization of what is right and end this action by your Government. It is a LOOSE / LOOSE situation for your country–personally, politically and economically.

Sorry for being wrong when last I wrote. I thought it was a Drug Dealer but he was a rapest and chid molester from what I hear. Please Governor of Hawaii. I hope you do not believe. (Its right! For a man to take away from a woman the one thing that is hers to give.) If you do man I fell sorry for you, but believe me when I say! (That is one thing that never should be taken from any kid!) So I still stand on my first decision. People of Hawaii please send Dog,Family and Frinds home so thay can settle this situation. Ow and Governor heres something for you to remember. (This life we live. Is built on the decisions we make and the way people we trust or believe in influence us. It gets confusing and their will always be when we’ll stand alone! Just remember all start as pawns, but if we move wiseiy and stick together. All can change when you get to the other side. Then it’s up to you too choose what piece you’ll be! We’ll still have to move wiseiy for the side we play, but that’s up to you and we’ll all choose our own way.)

I live in Bluefield West Virginia and watch ur show in my spare time, Dog, i can kinda relate to the situation because i was expelled from school last year in December for haveing a switchblade in my locker, when i took it from another kid after he asked a gurl to hold it so they were under the impression that i was going to do harm with the knife. I was givin 2 years supervised probation and i cant go back to school until January. And all i was trying to do is “the right thing”. The town i live in is full of drugs and violence and i wish that we had people up here as commited to stopping crime or the people who commit crime as you guys are. It would do us a lot of good and it would be a better place, So watching your show really gives me hope that one day we might get some people like you and your family to make my hometown a better and safer place, I wish u the best of luck in court and im praying for “THE DOG”, “YOUNGBLOOD”, and Leland. now going to send out to U.S. Magistrate Judge Barry Kurren also. This treason must
stop now, it is sending the wrong message to all U.S. Citizens that you can commit 84 rapes and flee the U.S., that Duane, Leland and Tim were the U.S. Marshall’s doing their job in Mexico and this is the thanks that they all get from their “American Justice System” Come on let’s all write all the letter we can to everyone with authority and stop this maddness now!!!!

To the very confused person who feels Dog should pay for his crime. When Dog captured Andrew Luster on June 18, 2003 police found date rape drugs, camera equipment in his apartment. Obviously, each day this monster was allowed on the street means potential another victim!! So maybe you have a sister or daughter, and how would you feel if someone did NOT prevent their rape if they could have?? What message are we sending to the criminals if we put our heroes in jail!! This is a case of good verse evil. So when you favor evil then your heart has turned from being able to feel what is right, all you know is rules and numbers. To Dog stand proud, I’m sure the Lord will prevail!!

  • I just watched the “Dog: The family Speaks”…and frankly Beth…you just lost a fan.

I was highly offended by your (sic) prayer to “Jesus” where you said:

“every tongue that rises against us will be condemned”

If you want to believe that Jesus will condemn people who disagree with you, go right ahead.

The rest of the show was one contradiction after another. One scene Dog claims that they thought it was all over when they left Mexico…yet in one of the next we hear Leyland talk about keeping track of “the statute of limitations”.

You make your living providing bond…and you though that leaving Mexico meant it was over????

And if you thought it was over…why is Leyland worrying about the statute of limitations?

And Beth…you told that television show woman that the police had broken down your door. She said so right on camera.

The other Chapman claimed that “they had lasers pointed on him” .

The show revealed one lie after another.

Those people here who are advocating second chances:

I agree with second chances…providing that the party comes clean …admits to their wrong doing…and doesn’t try to make excuses or blame others.

    We don’t have that here.

And praying to Jesus…and saying: ” every tongue that rises against us will be condemned”???????

This isn’t my definition of Christianity folks. ..sounds more like blasphemy.

But, to each his own. I think the Chapmans have made a major blunder by making those false claims against the Feds…and it’ll be man bites Dog when it’s all over.

If you read this Mr Chapman…there’s an old saying:

“He lies so much that he’s gotta get someone else to call his dogs for him”

I never heard it the other way’round before!

I think the case against Dog, Leland and Tim should be dropped. If is wasn’t for them Luster would have gotten away scott free! Do we want criminals to think they can do what ever they want to and then run to Mexico and never be punished for what they have done. Dog and the crew aren’t criminals. I don’t think the US should allow them to be turned over to Mexican authorities! Yes, I am a big fan of Dog and the crew but that aside I think they did what they had to do to get a dangerous person behind bars where he belongs! God be with Dog, Leland, Tim, Beth and their entire families. God will keep you safe. If we make them go back to Mexico then the US is just as much to blame as Mexico! Keep Dog and the Crew where they belong right here in the US. They aren’t the bad guys here!

First off I am a Dog fan. I love the fact that some one is so commited to doing their job and getting all of these crooked people off of civilized streets, and it would be awesome if we had more in society alone. But….There are two sides to every story. Dog did his job and got that piece of s*^$ off of the streets and put behind bars where he belongs, but he steped outside of americas bounderies. Mexico has their own set of laws, way different than those in the US. He proved his point that no matter where you run to he will get you, but there are laws that he also needs to abide to. First he captures those who flee bond, but he did the same. I know that he wasnt trying to hide, he was publicized, but he also needs to practice what he preaches. No matter what the outcome is I will still be a loyal fan to Dog, Leland, and Tim, they are AMERICAS HEROS, but Americas. My heart goes out to their family, Beth and the kids and the wives and children of the others and I do pray that everything will work out in the best of Dogs, Lelands and Tims intrest. Just keep your heads up and HERO’S you will always be, to me and to America.

I do however blame the United States for allowing this to happen to Dog & his family..He helps to protect the American citizens from people like Andrew Luster THE RICH,FAMOUS RAPIST..This is ludicris..His family probably paid off the Mexican Government..

HERE IS A LETTER YOU CAN USE, AS WELL AS THERE BEING ONE ON THE FIRST LINK MENTIONED IN THIS POST
I as an American am terrified. I do not understand why our country the Land of the Free, is complying with anything the Mexican government requests. I am ashamed to be an American today! Something must be done to retain the trust and faith in the US Government.
These three individual’s, Duane Dog Chapman, Leland Chapman and Tim Youngblood Chapman; they went and captured Andrew Luster who brutally raped many women in the United States, they gave relief to many women knowing that because of Dog and his Crew that America would be safe of Luster’s rage against women.
Now they are facing extradition to Mexico on charges of Restraint of an Individuals Liberties, according to Mexican officials. The penalty for this charge; 6 months to 4 years, which can include torture and possible death. Luster is now serving 124 years for 86 counts of brutal rape, who knows how many women he raped while on the run in Mexico. Luster was convicted and indicted in absentia as he had already fled to Mexico. Why wasn’t Luster’s passport confiscated and he given house arrest and a monitoring device (at the very least) yet Dog was not given as much respect as a brutal rapist.
We must protect American citizens from such brutality. How can an American Judge sign the death warrant of Dog, Leland and Tim for such a ‘petty charge’, considering the result being that the Dog and Crew brought a US wanted fugitive to justice? Is this the reward they will receive for bringing Andrew Luster to prison after being convicted in absentia? Is this how our government will actually show appreciation of what Dog and Crew did? If so, it is shameful, and I am not proud to be an American today!
Supporters have already cancelled trips to Mexico, boycotting Mexican business, and restaurants on American Soil, and we are also boycotting Max Factor products, and their affiliates.
We will send our message of disbelief and support any way we can for Dog, Leland, Tim and their families.
Please step in and up and show the American people that this can not and will not happen to any Americans and we will not take it anymore.
Show the American people that we can have faith and trust in our government to protect us all from such travesties of justice.
This can not happen in America to Americans!
God Bless Us all, and whoever can make the decision to save our faith in America!!!

I am ashamed to be an american!!! We have got to be the most hypocritcal pussies on earth. We protect illegal mexicans and give them OUR jobs Our money, free social services like medical insurance and food stamps our own citizens can’t get, Plus we let them stay here illegally and drain our resources while they breed like rats!!! We NEVER take care of our own and here is a perfect example. We should protect OUR citizen Dog the bounty hunter who does good work from the corrupt two faced bloodsucking mexican government. Their time would be much better spent rounding up all their offspring who are here in America illegally. They should also fix their government and country so the other ones that are here would leave too. Mexico should get its own house in order befor it starts punishing OUR real American Brothers. America should grown some balls and tell mexico to go straight to hell they are not getting Dog, or leland or Tim….but here are 7 million of your professional mooches that are here illegally back!!! Oh and by the way Andrew Luster was/is a Rapist….A bad criminal and Dog was the only one who could find him. Our own Law enforcement, as well as the FBI, CIA, Homeland insequrity none of which could save of from 9-11 either could find or aprehend Luster….sounds like JEALOUSY to the, the BIG Green eyed Monster….Little old Dog the bounty Hunter showed them ALL UP!!! Perhaps we should keep our own citizens here safe and sound and keep the Mexicans, Radical Islamists, and the rest of the “evil doers” outta here. Time to circle the wagons boys and protect our own!!!
Boycot anything Mexican, buy as litle gas as absolutely necessary, and remember to take care of your own. Stay out of other peoples business. and…Make sure they really DO have weapons of mass destruction! Lets make America GREAT again. I love this country. We should do everything to protect our rights and freedoms….that does not mean giving them up. We have lost our way. Bring back civics class. VOTE! and be willing to help US

  • One must not forget that everyone is under the law and that no one is above it. Not disagreeing with emotions here but sticking to the facts is an important aspect when conveying ones message across to others. Dog most likely forgot about his run in with the Mexican government in 2003, and as it is 2006 in which this arrest is made to the Chapman family. My belief is that the US government won’t extradite him to Mexico but most likely will be settled in court through a hefty sum. Because if you consider the elections that are coming up soon this event may very well boost peoples vote to the current Bush government if they can settle this disagreement between the Dog and the Mexican government without having to extradite him. However, for the moment they must follow the methods of law attaining to citizens of the US. So people, needless to say there is no reason for your harsh comments against Mexicans and what not.

They’ll tough it outand they’ll just get stronger once they’re out.

  • This is mental! The world needs people like Dog, and its a disgrace that the US authorities aren’t making this “go away”.

Justice has been done, Mexico should just be told to give him a slap on the wrists , and told not to go to Mexico again.

    All the best,
