Cruise ship cancels Hawaii run

Two Hawaii cruises — one from Ensenada, Mexico to Hawaii on Feb. 2 and one back to Ensenada on Feb. 13 — were canceled today by Celebrity Cruises, a division of Royal Caribbean Cruises. The company announced that the 91,000-ton, 1,950-passenger ship Infinity must be drydocked to replace ball-bearing units in its propulsion systems.

“The thrust-bearing failure in one of the ship’s propulsion systems developed very quickly, and while the ship continues to operate safely, its speed has had to be reduced,” said Celebrity Cruises president and CEO Jack Williams. “Unfortunately, this has resulted in us having to take the ship to an unscheduled drydock.”

Guests booked on the cancelled sailings will receive a full refund and a discount voucher for a future Celebrity cruise.

The Infinity is expeced to conclude its current run in San Diego on Sunday. The ship is expected to return to its scheduled sailings on February 23.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is a global cruise vacation company with a combined total of 25 ships in service, and also offers land-tour vacations through its cruise-tour division.
