Lottery ticket seller eyes Hawaii

While all eyes are on the winner of the biggest-ever $314.9 million Powerball lottery jackpot, the owner of the store that sold him the winning ticket has a plan for what to do with his portion of the award: sending his daughter on a Hawaiian honeymoon.

The ticket was purchased at the C&L Super Serve in Hurricane, W. Va., a town of 5,200 people 25 miles west of Charleston. Owner Larry Trogdon, who will get $100,000 for seling the ticket, told NBC, “I have a daughter getting married this summer.”

“I guess we’re honeymooning in Hawaii,” his daughter, Amy, interjected. She manages the store and is getting married next summer to a clerk there.

“Heck, if you’re going to Hawaii, I’m coming with you,” her father answered.

Lottery winner Andrew “Jack” Whittaker Jr., a 55-year-old West Virginia contractor who lives in the small town of Scott Depot, said he plans to give money to his church, his family, expand his contracting business and maybe buy a helicopter.

Whittaker said he would provide $17 million to three pastors and let them control the money and perhaps establish a Christian school. “Seventeen million in the state of West Virginia will really do good for the poor,” he said.

A lottery spokesperson said it was the world’s biggest jackpot ever won by a single ticketholder, and the third-largest jackpot in U.S. history.
